Proposal photography is always a little different from a regular session because so much of the planning happens before the camera ever comes out.

The goal is to know exactly where the proposal will happen, where I need to be, and how we can keep everything discreet until the moment arrives. Once the question is asked, the pressure is off—and that’s when some of my favorite photos usually happen.

There’s so much emotion packed into those first few minutes after a proposal. You’re processing what just happened, calling family, looking at the ring, laughing, crying, and realizing you’re officially engaged.

A wine tasting also gives you a natural reason to be there in the first place. You can spend time together, enjoy the property, and work the proposal into the day instead of making the entire outing feel like it revolves around one big moment.

From a photography perspective, having the proposal happen somewhere with multiple portrait locations is also a huge plus. Once the question is answered, you can stay on the property and take advantage of the vineyard, trees, and surrounding landscape for photos.

I also love photographing this part of a proposal because the energy is usually so easy. You’ve just gotten engaged, you’re still taking everything in, and the photos tend to reflect that naturally.
